Therapy for 20-Somethings

Many young people in their 20s are struggling today because there is no road map for life after school. Life was structured and scheduled until you were 18 or 22 (depending on if you went to college). You knew when to attend class and what work to turn in to get a good grade. You knew if you earned enough credits, you would graduate.

But life after school is very different. Maybe you are in a job that you hate. Perhaps you need help to have a career. No one can definitively tell you if you should return to school or move to a new city.

Sometimes the stress and pressure of these big life decisions are too much to handle.  Therapy for 20-somethings can help you navigate life.

Some of the Difficulties for 20-Somethings

  • Struggles with romantic relationships: You may feel different pressures regarding relationships. Do you want to date just for fun but feel like there is pressure for you to be thinking about marriage?
  • Navigating parental relationships: They may still treat you like a kid or a teenager, and you want to be treated like an adult.
  • New friendships: You may feel lonely because you moved away from your home or college town, and now you have to start over with making friends.
  • Sexuality: You may be struggling with understanding your sexuality. There may be more openness among your peers to try out homosexuality or to be transgender. This may directly conflict with how your parent’s generation views sexuality and can cause family conflicts.
  • Challenges of social media and technology: Millennials are the first generation to grow up with social media. With all of this new technology, there is a lot to learn through trial and error. It can affect your relationships, your career, and your mental health. Social media can add to feelings of depression and other mental health issues. You may feel left out of what your peers are doing or that other people’s lives are better than yours. Knowing how much is too much and the fine line between when social media can harm our psychological health can be challenging.
  • Career choices: You may have completed your education, but many 20-somethings still have to figure out what they can do with that degree. You may be able to rely on others to answer questions or tell you about their experiences, but ultimately you have to decide on your own. And what if you make the wrong one?
  • Fear of Failure: Millennials, as a whole, avoid failure because they haven’t had that much experience with it. Is your fear of failure holding you back from doing something you want? What if you could work through that fear of failure to live the life you want?

How We Can Help

If you feel overwhelmed, seeking help from a licensed counselor can help you work through these transitions and develop healthy coping skills. Maybe you are shutting down, feeling depressed, or so anxious about everything that you have started drinking more than you should or are having trouble coping with everyday activities.

A counselor can help you process these feelings and help you to be more confident.

You are not alone in this struggle; you don’t have to let these feelings get in the way of following your dreams. A little help can go a long way to easing the transition to adulthood.
