Hi, I’m Amy (she/her), a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) and Certified Advanced Drug and Alcohol Counselor (CAADC).
I graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Social Psychology from Lehigh University and a Master’s degree in School Counseling from Kutztown University. I have been working in the mental health field for over 20 years.
I’ve worked in a variety of therapeutic settings throughout my career, making my experience diverse. I have spent time in residential and outpatient treatment facilities, community-based programs, and school settings, where I supported both children and adults. I can also counsel you for anxiety, depression, mood disorders, family issues, interpersonal conflicts, and life stressors.
I specialize in substance use disorder and can help you navigate addiction as an individual and in relation to your family. I have experience working in both individual and group counseling sessions with clients who suffer from a Substance Use Disorder. I am knowledgeable in helping clients seeking abstinence and a life in recovery as well as those who need harm reduction strategies to help them reduce their use. I will help clients find strategies and skills to create a happier and healthier lifestyle for themselves and their loved ones.
Everyone is unique, and your experience in therapy should be as well. I will individualize our therapy sessions and approach our time with compassion and genuine care. My goal is to help you feel comfortable addressing your experiences and struggles. I am here to walk beside you.
The therapy techniques I am trained in and work from include Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Person-Centered therapy, and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT).
As my client, you can participate in your therapy actively at your own pace. Together, we will discover your strengths and enable you to set reachable goals to improve your overall well-being. Supporting and empowering you during each session is an important aspect of therapy.
I obtained my CAADC while working with clients with co-occurring disorders as a Substance Abuse Specialist. I understand the struggle of addiction and utilize active listening, motivational interviewing, and cognitive behavioral strategies during sessions. I have both the training and the experience to help you address your addiction. I will partner with you to make positive mental and behavioral changes. Together, we’ll aim to create a better life for you and help you abstain from substance use.
I look forward to meeting you and learning about your unique experiences that will help guide us toward the life you seek.

Amy McGowan offers in-person counseling at the (Emmaus) Lehigh Valley therapy office and online counseling to anyone in Pennsylvania.
Whether you are suffering from panic attacks, obsessive – compulsive disorder, or generalized anxiety we have therapists who use evidenced-based treatments, such as cognitive-bahavioral therapy, to help you.
Caregiving for a loved one can be challenging even in the best of circumstances. Often we don’t think about how the caregiver needs support, too. If you are experiencing burnout, our therapists can teach you skills to help you cope.
Depression, one of the most common mental health disorders, is very treatable. Our therapists are specially trained to help individuals with depression get back to feeling like themselves again.
Life transitions encompass many things, including starting or ending a romantic relationship, changes with work or school or making any big life change, such as a move. Often we underestimate how these changes will affect us emotionally until we find ourselves struggling with the ups and downs of the life transition.
While we don’t provide couples counseling at Move Forward, many individuals seek counseling to discuss how they can have healthier relationships. Our therapists can help you learn new ways of communicating, setting boundaries, and other ways to have more positive relationships with others.
Moving into adulthood brings its own set of challenges. You may feel pressure to have a “career” or find your life partner. You may be unsure of making these big life decisions and may feel lost because you no longer have school or other adults in your life telling you what you should choose.
It is important to understand that everyone’s experience with substance use is different; therefore, symptoms and consequences can differ. The levels of treatment also differ based on your usage and whether you seek support for substance use or have been diagnosed with an SUD.
Reach out today to get started. Our supportive staff will help guide you through the scheduling process, discuss special requests and consult your insurance needs.
